Beijing has asked domestic EV companies to ramp up spending with local chip makers, per Bloomberg. It has bruised Tesla too, as it battles for market share with domestic EV makers competing on price. AdvertisementApple, for instance, generated almost 20% of its revenue from sales in China last year. Nvidia reported $10.3 billion in revenue from China for its last fiscal year, up from $5.8 billion the year prior. Chinese EV makers like BYD are being asked to buy chips locally instead of from US firms.

BEIJING — Companies from Nvidia to Huawei are chasing the market for in-vehicle tech as the electric car industry booms, with Ecarx emerging as a new contender. Since 2017, Chinese car conglomerate Geely's founder and chairman, Eric Li, has been building Ecarx that provides software and chip systems for digital car cockpits and driver-assist. The company on Wednesday reported its fourth-quarter revenue surged 22% from a year earlier to $263 million. Geely's car brands, such as Lynk and Co, made up 70% of that revenue. "We can't compete with them in this area," he said, but noted there's still about 70% or 80% of the car market that doesn't need such advanced tech, and can buy simpler driver-assist tech focused on safety.

and "Donation not approved," but the people who send them all want the same thing: to halt the Republican political contribution platform WinRed from making any more automatic, recurring withdrawals from their accounts. According to campaign finance reports, WinRed processed $14,300 in political contributions from Elliot and her husband, Orin Elliot, between 2020 and the end of 2023. "Older folks are generally more vulnerable and they're often more easily taken in" by aggressive political fundraising appeals, according to Saurav Ghosh, director of federal campaign finance reform at the nonprofit watchdog Campaign Legal Center. "You see with former President Trump, that he's fundraising off his indictments. That refund rate was more than four times that of President Joe Biden's campaign and surrounding political apparatus at that time, according to the Times.

For decades, the New York Philharmonic, the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, was an all-male bastion. Often described as the first woman to become a permanent member of the Philharmonic, O’Brien was part of a pioneering group of female artists who opened doors for other women. O’Brien, who retired from the Philharmonic in 2021 after a 55-year career, has resisted speaking publicly about her life in music, preferring to stay in the background. But a new documentary short, “The Only Girl in the Orchestra,” directed by her niece, the filmmaker Molly O’Brien, looks at her struggles and achievements. (The film premiered last week at DOC NYC, a festival that celebrates documentary film.)

Tyrone Siu | ReutersBEIJING — U.S. chipmaking giant Nvidia has reportedly found a way to sell high-end chips to Chinese companies — while remaining compliant with U.S. rules aimed at curbing China's access to the tech. Nvidia is set to deliver three new chips to domestic manufacturers in the coming days, Chinese financial media Cailian Press said Thursday, citing sources. The chips — called HGX H20, L20 PCle and L2 PCle — are based on Nvidia's H100 chip, the report said. Nvidia said in a September 2022 filing the U.S. government would still allow it to develop the H100 in China. In the near term, Chinese manufacturers have no better option and they will continue to buy Nvidia's chips, while searching for replacements.

The artificial intelligence behind ChatGPT-like products and autonomous driving is driving enormous demand for Nvidia's chips in China. Chinese companies also dominate the burgeoning electric car market , where Nvidia has had a fast-growing business of selling chips for assisted and fully autonomous driving. When it comes to such chips for cars, Nomura analysts said there's little reason to worry. Auto chip market BYD, Nio , Li Auto and Xpeng are among the China-based electric automakers using the Orin chip. In the automotive chip category, they noted Nvidia's Thor chip and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride Flex chip both fall into that more advanced category.

Sharing a stage at Foxconn's annual tech showcase in Taipei, Foxconn Chairman Liu Young-way and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said their companies would build these "AI factories" together. And the data centres that produce it are AI factories," Huang said, adding that Foxconn had the expertise and scale to build them globally. Showing a hand-drawn sketch, Huang - sporting his signature black leather jacket - explained how "AI factories" could continuously receive and process data from autonomous electric vehicles to make them smarter. The AI factory would improve the software and update the entire AI fleet," said the Taiwan-born Huang. "In the future, every company, every industry, will have AI factories."

The Denza N7 is set to begin deliveries in about two weeks, according to the company. In another page from Nio's playbook, the Denza N7 launch in Beijing was followed by a live music performance. Its prior electric model, the D9 multi-purpose vehicle, claims more than 10,000 sales a month since since March. At the time Zeng said he expected competition in China's new energy vehicle market would move into the 400,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan price range and above. The 100,000 yuan to 200,000 yuan price range has been the primary price range for cars in China, Zeng said.

Current BYD recruiting advertisements for engineers specialising in autonomous driving that target top Chinese universities such as Zhejiang University, indicate that the hiring is ongoing. BYD set up an intelligent driving research division in Shanghai last year, according to three sources with direct knowledge of the matter. The automaker, which is 9.87% owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) and had some 660,000 employees as of April, declined to elaborate on its autonomous driving strategy. BYD has also this year teamed up with autonomous driving chip technology firms Nvidia (NVDA.O) and Horizon Robotics (RBOT.TO), saying it wanted to develop more intelligent vehicles. Both are high-volume models and further advances in BYD autonomous driving features would popularise the technology within China.

Elon Musk has rolled out updated descriptions for verified Twitter accounts which haven't paid for Twitter Blue. Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and Musk himself come with a warning they "may or may not be notable." The change is part of Musk's alterations to the system of being verified on Twitter, which he has described as "lords and peasants." But this is now defined as "legacy verification." It means that public figures like Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and even Musk himself, all have warnings which suggest they "may not be notable."
